It was a beautiful day on campus☁️
Last week, I went to Purdue to take some engagement photos for friends Allie and Kyle and besides the heat - couldn’t have asked for better weather.
I am really happy with how this image turned out and have been trying to find the perfect angle at the Gateway Arch for awhile now, and I think this is it.
I wrote a short story on my website explaining the positioning, which you can read via a link in my bio (tmahlmann.com) because many students are about to arrive on campus for their first year and many times, people have their pictures taken there, and you can hardly tell who it is - so my goal is to help fix that. In short it goes like this:
There’s a man-hole cover (pictured) that is closer to the bushes/street relative to the Arch. When having your picture taken there, stand on/in front of it.
Have your photographer stand halfway between you and the curb, and for most smartphones and kit lens DSLRs this angle is perfect, for multiple reasons.
First, you can see the faces of the people being photographed - which if you were to stand under the Arch, could never tell.
Second, you fit the whole Arch structure as well as the buildings, trees, and greenery in the frame as well.
Third, as your subjects appear bigger in the frame, they block out people arriving at the Arch from behind or standing underneath it!
The full explanation is in my latest article under Tutorials.
I don’t think this is a hard and fast way to do it, and you’re welcome to do it however you like but just thought I’d share my ideas!
I hope my article helps you take better photos at the Gateway Arch!
